Establishment:

The Orange-breasted Falcon Bird Reserve was established in August 2008 with the aim of preserving a sample of the habitat of Orange-breasted Falcon (Falco deiroleucus) and preserve in perpetuity one of the most vulnerable landscapes in Colombia, the piedmont plains affected by the extension of the livestock border.

Location and Area:

The reserve is located in the foothills of the Colombian eastern plains, northwest of the city of Villavicencio, capital of the department of Meta (Colombia). Its area is 74 acres and is located between 800 and 1.100 m above sea level (See map).

Biological importance:

In the reserve you can see a large number of bird species of which several are those of the prairie ecosystem, making it the limit of the bird species in the lowlands of the Orinoco and the typical species of montane forests of the Cordillera Oriental, among which are the Orange-breasted Falcon (Falco deiroleucus), the Gilded Barbet (Capito auratus) and Speckled Chachalaca (Ortalis guttata). You can also see mammals like the Palmero Anteater (Giant Anteater) (Myrmecophaga thrydactila).

Climate:

The reserve has an average annual temperature of 25 ° C. The rainfall is bimodal type tetra seasonal. The first period of rainfall occurs between April and May and the second between September and November, during these five months 62% of the total rainfall takes place, September and October are the wettest months and January and February are the driest months.

Biophysical characteristics:

Situated in tropical rainforest and made ??up a small portion of secondary forest in excellent condition. Adjacent to a large portion of primary and secondary forests little altered, called the forests of Bavaria.

Conservation:

Ecological restoration and Expansion of the conservation area.

Facilities:

Accommodation for 4 people, electricity and drinking water.

Attractions:

Hiking trails through the reserve and the road through the forests of Bavaria, bird watching;  the beautiful views of the city of Villavicencio are delightful, savannas of the Orinoco and the great canyon of the river Guatiquía.

General Recommendations:

  • Respect the natural values ??of the reserve, plants, and animals.
  •  No collection of biological material.
  • Follow the instructions of the reserve staff and travel on established trails.
  • You must report health problems or allergies.
  • Camping is allowed in designated areas.
  •  Pantanal boots should be worn & waterproofs and a mosquito net should be taken.
  •  Disinfect shoes with bleach or clorox to prevent the spread of the chytrid fungus (one of the leading causes of death in amphibian the world).

Orange-breasted Falcon Bird Reserve launched

ProAves established the new Orange-breasted Falcon Bird Reserve in the lush humid foothills of the Llanos thanks to the support of World Land Trust-US. Located beside the city of Villavicencio, capital of the department of Meta, the new reserve supports over 240 bird species and many rare mammals.
