8th Blue-billed Curassow Festival 2012

With the participation of over 400 people, the 8th Blue-billed Curassow Festival was held in the town of Puerto Pinzón in Boyacá, aiming to raise awareness among communities, especially children and young people who live beside the area El Paujil Bird Reserve.

New ProAves reserve thanks to land donation

Realizing the need to conserve Colombia's natural resources, Sergio Agudelo generously donated 131 acres of intact Andean cloud forests to ProAves.  Mr. Agudelo's property has formed the new bird reserve "Cucarachero - Andivia" which protects the Critically Endangered Munchique Wood-wren and many endemic and rare species.

First ever photographs of the male Black-backed Thornbill

ProAves is very excited to announce the FIRST EVER photographs of the male Black-backed Thornbill (Ramphomicron dorsale) hummingbird! This beautiful individual male was first observed and photographed by El Dorado Reserve staff Sam Martinez and Lorenzo Mora on December 21st. In the month of January, ProAves President Alonso Quevedo captured these fantastic images of the young male.

Reforestation efforts underway in 228 farms

First record of spectacled bear in El Paujil Reserve

Roncesvalles, pioneer town for the signing of Reciprocal Water Agreements

In September, ProAves assisted two property owners in Roncesvalles, Tolima, to commit to preserving the majority of their land that is within the town’s watershed. As agreed, for at least ten years, the total of 3,200 acres will be saved and restored for natural habitat conservation.

First telemetry study of the Rusty-faced Parrot

The study was conducted for 6 months at the Colibrí del Sol Bird Reserve by tracking the daily route of the parrots in order to obtain data on preference and habitat selection and identify potential changes in their movements in this area.

In addition to officials from several government organizations, among which are: the SENA, the Municipality of Puerto Boyacá, UMATA, Formar Futuro, CORPOBOYACÁ, Puerto Pinzón College, Fagua-Cómbita Indian Reservation, Women for conservation, UTV and Puerto Pinzón, la Arenosa and Brisas del Ermitaño community action groups.
