Easter is coming and with it serious threats to various species of flora and fauna such as the Yellow-eared parrot and the Quindio wax palm in Colombia. Due to the once exclusive use of the endemic Quindio wax palm for Palm Sunday celebrations, the only habitat of the Yellow-eared Parrot, the Quindio wax palm and consequently the parrot were driven to near extinction.

| New ProAves reserve thanks to land donation |
|
|
Realizing the need to conserve Colombia's natural resources, Sergio Agudelo generously donated 131 acres of intact Andean cloud forests to ProAves. Mr. Agudelo's property has formed the new bird reserve "Cucarachero - Andivia" which protects the Critically Endangered Munchique Wood-wren and many endemic and rare species.

From the 21st to the 24th of February, ProAves will be participating at the "Birding at Congress" exhibition for the IV annual International Forum Against Animal Abuse in Bogotá, Colombia. There will be 12 large posters focusing on Environmental Education and the work performed by ProAves.

| First ever photographs of the male Black-backed Thornbill |

ProAves is very excited to announce the FIRST EVER photographs of the male Black-backed Thornbill (Ramphomicron dorsale) hummingbird! This beautiful individual male was first observed and photographed by El Dorado Reserve staff Sam Martinez and Lorenzo Mora on December 21st. In the month of January, ProAves President Alonso Quevedo captured these fantastic images of the young male.

| Reforestation efforts underway in 228 farms |

Ensuring the survival of endemic and migratory birds and wildlife, ProAves "Cerulean Warbler Conservation Corridor" has undertaken massive reforestation efforts with the local community of San Vicente de Chucuri. Already, 228 farms have received and planted trees with ProAves.

| New mobile app features the amazing world of frogs |

The first ever IUCN mobile application developed together with Nokia is now available for consumer use, ready to download from the Nokia Store. The free-for-download app is the result of a partnership between Nokia and SOS (Save Our Species), a global species conservation fund to protect threatened species and their habitats.

| Wetlands: critical habitat for migratory birds |

During the XIII Migratory Bird Festival, ProAves made a series of birding trips to different wetlands across the Bogotá area in order to identify migratory birds and to publicize the plight of the 13 marshes at threat of being drained and destroyed.

With the objective of creating community interest in the protection of the Yellow-eared Parrot and migratory birds in Colombia, the 8th Migratory Birds Festival and the 3rd Yellow-eared Parrot Festival were celebrated in Antioquia and the 7th Fuertes’s Parrot Festival in Quindío.

| Colombia reaffirmed as #1 nation for birds |
|
|
ProAves published the 15th issue of its journal Conservación Colombiana, which includes five articles related to new bird records for Colombia plus the annual review of the national list of birds. To date, we confirm a total of 1,889 bird species occurring in Colombia to reaffirm that Colombia is the #1 nation of birds on earth.

After the success in 2010 of the Guide to the Birds of Colombia in English language and coinciding with the international month of Birds, the Fundacion ProAves is pleased to present the new Field Guide to the Birds of Colombia in Spanish that meets original artwork of the 1889 species recorded in Colombia.

| First telemetry study of the Rusty-faced Parrot |

The study was conducted for 6 months at the Colibrí del Sol Bird Reserve by tracking the daily route of the parrots in order to obtain data on preference and habitat selection and identify potential changes in their movements in this area.

| Community conservation workshop in El Paujil Reserve |

The workshop was attended by various members of the community of Puerto Pinzón and Puerto Boyacá (Boyacá). In addition to officials from several government organizations, among which are: the SENA, the Municipality of Puerto Boyacá, UMATA, Formar Futuro, CORPOBOYACÁ, Puerto Pinzón College, Fagua-Cómbita Indian Reservation, Women for conservation, UTV and Puerto Pinzón, la Arenosa and Brisas del Ermitaño community action groups.
