Páramo del Sol is the most magnificent volcanic massif in Colombia, with pristine páramo and lakes surrounded by a ring of lush montane cloud forest. Sadly the unprotected massif contains rich mineral deposits, such as zinc and gold, which are threatened by mining.

In 2004, a ProAves expedition rediscovered the splendid glittering (though poorly named) Dusky Starfrontlet after over 50 years, plus a new species of Tapaculo!

ProAves immediately established a 1,450 acre reserve and manages 3,400 acres of adjacent municipal land to protect the Dusky Starfrontlet and an exceptional diversity of endemic flora and fauna.

The new visitor centre is located about 1.5 hours’ horse ride from the páramo, and from which a probable new subspecies of Rusty-faced Parrot can sometimes be seen.
