The Gorgeted Puffleg Hummingbird Bird Reserve was established in 2011 in order to conserve the habitat of the Gorgeted Puffleg Hummingbird (Eriocnemis isabellae) endemic and listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN.
Location and Area
Located in the Colombian Pacific, on the western flank of the Western Cordillera, in the town of Argelia, Department of Cauca, Colombia. In 1853 acres the Colorful Puffleg Hummingbird (Eriocnemis mirabilis), an endemic species which is critically endangered, is also protected.
On the Reserve, the following species have been reported as having some risk of extinction:
2 species which are critically endangered CR, the Gorgeted Puffleg Hummingbird (Eriocnemis isabellae) and the Colorful Puffleg Hummingbird (Eriocnemis mirabilis).
2 species in Vulnerable (VU) state, The Black-and-chestnut Eagle (Spizaetus isidori ) and Giant Antpitta (Grallaria gigantea) .
6 almost endemic and Vulnerable status species (VU) , The Cloud-forest Pygmy Owl (Glaucidium nubicola), The Baudó Guan (Penelope ortoni) endemic, the Long-wattled Umbrellabird (Cephalopterus penduliger), The Bicolored Antvireo (Dysithamnus occidentalis) , The Multicoloured Tanager (Chlorochrysa nitidissima), The Tanager Finch (Oreothraupis arremonops) .
8 almost endemic state and Near Threatened (NT) species; The Black-billed Mountain Toucan (Andigena nigrirostris), The Chestnut-crested Cotinga (Ampelion rufaxilla) , The Chestnut Wood Quail (Odontophorus hyperythrus) , The Toucan Barbet (Semnornis ramphastinus) , The Star-chested Treerunner (Margarornis stellatus) , The Yellow-headed Manakin (Xenopipo flavicapilla) , The Beautiful Jay (Cyanolyca pulchra), The Purplish-mantled Tanager (Iridosornis porphyrocephalus) (near-endemic) .
The altitudinal variation ranges from 1,550-3,500 masl encompassing sub Andean ecosystems and well preserved Andean moors and being part of the sub-basins of Guaitara and Plateado rivers, major tributaries of the San Juan del Micay.
The climate is typical of montane and montane moist forests are forests with low fog concentration where mosses and ferns predominate.
